No name is more synonymous with the lore of East Africa than Carr-Hartley. Since the late 1880's, the family has been the living definition of the great African adventure, as hunters, as big game trappers, and safari operators. Carr-Hartley's early footsteps explored many a remote hunting area setting an example for numerous hunters during the early game hunting days and Pioneered wildlife capture and translocation in Africa.

The history of these two families, spans the entire British Colonial era in Kenya. Denys Finch Hatton was a friend, Karen Blixen (who later wrote "Out of Africa" as Isak Dineson) a neighbor. The movies "Snows of Kilmanjaro" and "Mugambo" were filmed on the Carr-Hartley family ranch, and pictures of Clark Gable, Ava Gardner and Ernest Hemingway are part of the family photo album. Tanya is a member of the well known Hopcraft family, who first set foot in Kenya in the late 19th century, on the shores of lake Naivasha.
