The father and son duo, John Mara and Francis Ndirangu, have left a remarkable mark on Kenya’s safari scene. John Mara, one of the country’s foremost wildlife trappers, helped shape Kenya’s safari heritage and passed his deep knowledge of the bush to the next generation. His son, Francis Ndirangu, (known as “Ndirangu”) has followed in his footsteps, working in almost every role within the safari industry. Starting as a room steward with Specialised Safaris, he transitioned to truck driver moving mobile camps across the country. He doubles up as a wildlife spotter, Tanya’s right hand, and our breakfast setup pro when in the bush. “Ndirangu’s” eagerness to learn and genuine desire to delight guests are the hallmarks of a truly exceptional team member.

Grace Kagendo

Grace began her journey in 2001 working with Tanya and Mikey at Specialised Safaris. In those early days she wore many hats, helping with a wide variety of tasks and learning the ropes of the business as it grew.

Today, she is a steady and reliable presence in the company, ensuring everything runs smoothly and that supplies are always in order. Her organization and dedication keep the behind-the-scenes operations moving seamlessly.

Of course, as she likes to say, there’s no such thing as an “ordinary day” especially when warthogs wander through the car park and monkeys keep a close eye on the packing boxes. Her experience, adaptability, and good humor make her an essential part of the team.

Sessen Lekalaile

Sessen has been tracking and spotting wildlife in the wilderness longer than most can remember, earning a reputation as one of the most experienced and reliable spotters. When he first started, he didn’t speak a word of English, but his natural humor, sharp instincts, and quick learning made him a favorite among colleagues and guests alike. Over the years, he picked up English on the job while honing his incredible spotting skills, not to mention his accuracy with a “rungu” (traditional Samburu throwing tool)

Known for his tireless work ethic, He is one of Mikey’s most trusted right-hand men, always ready to track elusive wildlife, share a laugh, and ensure every safari is fun and full of great experiences. He challenges himself to always find the elusive wildlife. His combination of experience, humor, and dedication makes him an invaluable part of the team and a true Mara legend.

Peter Ewalan aka (Ekai)

Ekai is the ultimate problem solver and a true jack of all trades. Following in the footsteps of his father, (Ewolan- photographed next to Mikey above) who worked as a gun bearer for Mike Snr, Ekai has grown up closely connected to life in the bush.

Highly intelligent and naturally curious, Ekai learned most of his technical skills on the job. Over the years, he has developed a remarkable ability to troubleshoot problems and find practical solutions, often using whatever tools and materials are available, in remote situations. Whether it’s repairing tentage, or the truck, fixing electrical issues, or handling general maintenance, Ekai approaches every task with determination and creativity.

Ekai and Mikey grew up together and share many childhood experiences in the bush!

Musyoka Mulavu

Musyoka (On the right-hand side)

Musyoka is a dedicated and hardworking member of the team with a strong background in service and housekeeping. He was initially trained by Mikey’s mother Sue, who instilled the importance of attention to detail, warm hospitality, and maintaining high standards in guest service.

He later took a role with the Mobile safari team, where he helped uphold these standards and guide others in delivering exceptional service. Musyoka also received training in table décor from Tanya, developing a keen eye for creating beautiful and welcoming dining settings for guests.

Known for his positive, can-do attitude and strong work ethic, Musyoka approaches every task with enthusiasm and care. His dedication of 40 years of service, experience, and commitment to excellence make him an invaluable part of the team.

Together, these remarkable individuals represent the heart and spirit of Specialised Safaris. Their stories reflect years of dedication, shared experiences in the bush, and a deep passion for creating exceptional safari journeys.

Their legacy continues to inspire the next generation of safari professionals, ensuring that every journey remains rooted in experience, care, and a true connection to the wild.
